Living in the COVID World: An Employment Law Perspective (2.0 CPE)

When:  Oct 8, 2020 from 12:00 PM to 02:00 PM (CT)
Associated with  GULF SOUTH REGIONAL COUNCIL

Bruce Henderson, one of our favorite presenters, is back to present “Living in the COVID World: An Employment Law Perspective”

All businesses have been seriously impacted by the COVID pandemic, from making difficult decisions about whether to layoff or furlough workers, how to pay them while they are out, what to do when an employee reports an exposure (or worse, a positive screen), can or should we allow them to “telework,” whether you can reassign workers, and how do you figure out their pay. Bruce Henderson will lead an interactive workshop for us again this year.  He will cover topics dealing with COVID, our responses to COVID, can we be immune from liability if we tried in good faith to comply with all of these laws (which change from week to week), can we require masking, what if an employee objects to masking, and how the CDC, EEOC, OSHA, Department of Labor and other government agencies are reacting to these and other issues.

Bruce H. Henderson is a partner in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama law firm of Phelps, Jenkins, Gibson & Fowler.  Born in Memphis, TN, he graduated from Rhodes College and the University of Memphis School of Law.  He is admitted to the bars in both Tennessee and Alabama.

Bruce has tried employment cases representing employers in state and federal courts from California to Wyoming, Ohio, and Alabama.  He is a member of the bar of the United States Supreme Court and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.  He has received the highest rating from the prestigious Martindale-Hubbell legal directory (AV) for attorneys practicing in his area. He was also recently named as one of America's Top 100 High Stakes Litigators in Alabama.

His practice areas include all aspects of labor and employment law, including a regular practice before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the U.S. and Alabama Department of Labor, OSHA, and the National Labor Relations Board.  He has represented companies in numerous union campaigns and unfair labor practice charges, wage and hour audits, EEOC charges, mediations and arbitrations as well as implementing preventative measures for businesses like employee handbooks, harassment training, and positive supervision techniques.

Bruce is active in his community, having served on the board or as Presidents of Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama, the Rotary Club of Tuscaloosa, and many other civic organizations like the United Way of West Alabama.

Bruce is an avid cyclist.  He is married to Felicia Ellison, and he has two children, Maggie and Andrew, who live in the fabulous areas of Bend, OR and Asheville, NC, where they love to rock climb, hike, ride bikes, and embarrass their dad. His greatest accomplishment is that he is a new granddad to little Elliot, a beautiful 6-week old baby girl.
